01 What Prompt Engineering Actually Means
Prompt engineering is the process of designing, testing and refining instructions so that an AI system has a clearer understanding of the task you want completed.

You are reducing uncertainty. A useful prompt tells the system enough about the task to make the expected result easier to understand.

The task is the action you want performed. Weak prompts often contain only a topic instead of an instruction.

The audience, goal and available time all affect the plan, so they are useful context.
04 Use Constraints Without Overloading the Prompt
Constraints define boundaries. They are useful when you need the answer to follow specific requirements.
Common constraints
- Maximum or approximate length.
- Topics that must be included.
- Topics that should be avoided.
- Reading level or technical difficulty.
- Available budget, time or resources.
- Required tone or style.
Avoid adding restrictions that do not affect the actual task. More instructions do not automatically produce a better prompt.
05 Control the Output Format
If the structure matters, ask for it directly. Do not expect the system to guess the format you have in mind.

Problems That Make Prompts Less Useful
A topic tells the system what subject you are thinking about, but not what action you want performed.
Context should affect the answer. Extra information can make the actual instruction harder to identify.
Asking for a highly detailed answer that must also be extremely short can create an unclear priority.
If you need a table, checklist or ordered process, state that requirement instead of fixing the structure afterwards.
A targeted follow-up instruction can often improve a weak answer more efficiently than rebuilding the prompt from zero.
Better prompts can improve usefulness, but important factual information should still be checked independently.
